Step Three: The Preliminary Plan

Residential Design sheet

The Preliminary Plan, and meeting, is perhaps the most critical of all meetings. This is where the final choices are selected, the final decisions are made, and the path toward the Final Plan is set. We prefer to meet all stakeholders at this time, due to the fixed nature of the decisions made. This plan set will have all the plans and information, though details and material lists are not present at this stage due to their preliminary nature. Construction preliminary estimates are listed depending on seasonal availability, and the future schedule is outlined.

Preliminary Plan Goals

A few items to solidify in this meeting include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Agree on plant choices
  • Finalize material choices
  • Determine site fixtures, e.g., lighting, irrigation, etc.
  • Agree on hardscape specifics
  • Present documents, e.g., plan set, information forms, surveys, billing, etc.

Design Plan Steps:

The Concept Plan is the first official plan and meeting, and establishes the direction of the design in diagram form, and establishes designer/client relationship.

The Preliminary Plan is the first overall plan set, and is mostly complete with the exception of details and material counts, which will be complete in the Final Plan phase.

The Final Plan will include all information and drawings necessary to install the design.
