Step Five: Installation

Now the time for decisions about installing your landscape design. Many homeowners choose to DIY their home landscape. They feel it puts them in touch with everything happening, including getting familiar with all the many plants they’ll be maintaining through the years to come. It does take a little time to get familiar with them all, so that’s common. Some will look to us for guidance but hire their own installation contractor, or a family friend, etc. Sometimes we will seek out contractors, including a General Contractor, and present a few options to the homeowner. In any case, there are many alternatives. The important thing is to get anything that will cost money reduced to writing.

Installation Meeting Goals

For the best result, when arranging and following through with the installation phase, the following goals will help prevent installation failures

  • Materials and plant lists be thorough and reduced to writing
  • Alternative materials or plants should be discussed, but the choice always remains with the client
  • Have a plan for installation stops due to weather, funds, anything that can stall construction progress
  • Agree upon a payment system and method
  • Ensure documentation is always complete and distributed to all stakeholders

Design Plan Steps:

The Concept Plan is the first official plan and meeting, and establishes the direction of the design in diagram form, and establishes designer/client relationship.

The Preliminary Plan is the first overall plan set, and is mostly complete with the exception of details and material counts, which will be complete in the Final Plan phase.

The Final Plan will include all information and drawings necessary to install the design. Upon delivery of the Final Plan set, the contractor can be brought in and construction meetings can begin.
